Michelle Obama Debuts Bangin’ New ‘Do on Her Birthday

According to Yahoo:

New birthday, new presidential term … new ‘do for First Lady Michelle Obama!

The POTUS’ wife debuted the look – straight, shoulder-length hair with bangs and some face-framing fringe – on Thursday (her 49th birthday) in a photo she posted on her new Twitter account. Mrs. Obama, who normally sports a sleek style with a side part or a swept back look, also donned a red-and-pink Zac Posen creation in the shot, a candid of her chatting with Inaugural citizen co-chair David Hall about Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

And the people have spoken! The majority of those who replied to @FLOTUS on Twitter voted that the new look was quite an improvement with more than 300 retweets and favorites. “Happy Birthday, and great hair,” tweeted ‏@lea_artz.

Monday, of course, will also be busy for the First Family since it’s the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Nearly 800,000 people are expected to descend upon Washington, D.C.’s National Mall to watch him be sworn in for his second term. Also on hand for the festivities will be Beyonce, who will sing the national anthem, and Kelly Clarkson, who will serenade the president and first lady with “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.”

Wonder what will Michelle will wear to the Inauguration to go with those new bangs?

Glenn Beck Dunks Barack Obama Figurine In A “Mason Jar With A Little Bit Of Urine”

These conservative busters are way the f**k out of pocket when it comes to our POTUS…

Via RawStory:

Former Fox News conspiracy theorist Glenn Beck put on his art critic hat Tuesday and proceeded to dunk a figurine of President Barack Obama into a jar of what he claimed to be urine. Repeatedly calling himself one of the “100 most important people in the art industry,” Beck adopted a phony French accent and began painting clothes onto fine art nudes, seemingly under the impression that he was making a statement about artistic freedom.

Finally, he pulled out a bottle of yellow liquid he claimed to be urine and dunked a figurine of Obama into it, in an apparent homage to a 1989 photograph by artist Andres Serrano, depicting a figure of Jesus Christ in a jar of urine. “It’s a mason jar with a little bit of pee-pee in it, uh?” Beck said. “…This is when an icon and art come together.”

“Now some will say that all Glenn Beck did is put the president in a jar of pee-pee,” Beck went on. “While technically correct, yes, I prefer to call this work of art by its more appropriate and professional title. I like to call this, ‘Flobama.’ Sure we can dumb it down for the masses of little people so they can understand. Yes, we have Obama in pee-pee. Mmm? Oui? Yes? This can be yours for a bargain price of $25,000.”

He added that if someone buys it, he’ll make another with First Lady Michelle Obama, this time in a “skinny bottle,” which he said somehow represents her “little abs.”

The whole thing was supposed to make a point about how art should be protected under the Constitution no matter whose feelings it hurts. Trouble is, the message sort-of gets lost amid what may go down as one of Beck’s most bizarre performances to date.

Eff this guy!!

What Is Wrong With This Picture?

Michelle Obama Portrayed As A Slave On Cover Of Spanish Magazine

The recent issue of a popular spanish periodical is getting the side-eye from many in the black community as it features First Lady Michelle Obama portrayed as a slave.

he August 2012 issue of Magazine Fuera de Serie, a supplement to Spanish newspaper Expansion, features a cover image guaranteed to turn heads.

First Lady Michelle Obama’s face (pictured) is superimposed over an 1800 female slave painting by French artist Marie-Guilhelmine Benoist. Seated on a chair covered with the American Flag, right breast exposed, and wearing an Aunt Jemina headscarf, the image is part of a feature article examining Mrs. Obama’s popularity among the American public.

“…Behind every great man there is a great woman [which best] describes the Obama marriage. In the shadow of the U.S. President is a person whose popularity ratings exceed those of Barack’s own. This person is none other than his wife Michelle,” reads the roughly translated description for “Michelle Tataranieta De Esclava, Dueña De América” (Michelle, Granddaughter Of A Slave. Lady Of America).

This wouldn’t be the first time in recent history that Europe has depicted a prominent African-American woman in a seemingly negative light. Just last year a Dutch magazine described Rihanna as “De N***ab***h” in an interview write up.

Do you find this cover offensive? Should Europe aim to become more aware of what depictions are offensive to American and/or African-American culture?

Michelle Obama Tells iVillage About Her Body Image, “50 Shades Of Grey” & Morning Workouts

First Lady Michelle Obama talked to iVillage recently where she served as guest editor and offered advice on having a positive body image, she also discussed  50 Shades of Grey, and the importance of having girlfriends. In an exclusive video interview With iVillage Chief Correspondent Kelly Wallace, Mrs. Obama revealed details about the first family’s health habits, the importance of her girlfriends, offering support to Sasha and Malia and more.  iVillage is one of the number one spots online for women’s important issues.

Here are the highlights:

On Quitting Smoking:

(Barack) stopped. And I have to say that I know that his ability to ultimately kick the habit was because of the girls, because they’re at the age now where you can’t hide. It’s clear.  So when it comes to smoking, we’re very clear — it’s not good for you; it’s addicting. And Barack used himself as an example of how difficult it was…I think that he didn’t want to look his girls in the eye and tell them that they shouldn’t do something that he was still doing.  So they played an important role in him finally saying, I’ve got to get this done. It wasn’t the presidency; it wasn’t the pressure from me; it wasn’t even his own health because he wasn’t a big smoker.

Asked if she’s read “50 Shades of Grey:

You know, you can’t live in this society without hearing about “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Everybody has heard about that book, including me. Neither of us (the President or First Lady) have read it, because I haven’t had time to read anything. But I have a lot of friends, staff, people who are reading it, so it’s all around.

Asked why she thinks it’s so popular:

Not having read it, it’s hard to know exactly what’s going on. But it’s obviously tacked into something, and giving people permission to explore parts of themselves that maybe felt a bit taboo. But I don’t know, that’s just a good guess.

What healthy habit has been easiest to form since coming to the White House?

Surprisingly, the best healthy habit is eating dinner together on a regular basis. And I think we underestimate the importance of families sitting down around the table at a set time. And it’s hard for many families.

It was hard for us until we got to the White House, but we talk about this all the time. Barack can at least control that part of his schedule. He can stop whatever he is doing, come home at 6:30 p.m. We kind of structure our lives around mealtime. And right now, the people who mess that schedule up these days are the kids, because they’re busy and they have things that they’re doing and afterschool activities, and sports and games and things like that.

And also just having a kitchen full of healthy snacks — and I say this all the time — I need it more than my kids need it, because if there’s a bag of chips in my cabinet, I’m going to eat them. I’m going to eat them, and I’m going to eat them until they’re gone, right?

On the First Family’s Healthy Habits and Vices:

Malia is juice…I suggested to her that she cut her juice in half, that first of all she drinks water first when she’s thirsty and not just juice. And then, when she has the juice, do like one-third seltzer water or water just to cut the sugar content….

Barack, his is chips and salsa and guacamole. And peanuts – nuts – almonds, pecans. And there’s a way that he eats them that we tease him about — he kind of shakes them in one hand and creates, like, a little dispenser with his index finger where he can just pop them in his mouth. And I kind of imitate him when he does that. But he’s a nut guy. That’s what he’s munching on all the time. And if there are chips and salsa, he really can’t stop eating those.

For me, it’s French fries, which is good because you can’t just have French fries around, so that’s helpful. But if there are French fries in the vicinity, I’m done. It’s over.

For Sasha, she’s kind of a free for all.

On her incredibly important bond with her girlfriends:

We started developing this playgroup when the kids were in carriers, because it was more of a mommy play date then. And we found that many of us — we were all working women. We had husbands who traveled — sort of similar stories. Some were single-parent mothers. And we just found that being able to meet once a week, and kind of debrief and talk about the kids and talk about the challenges of motherhood and what we were worried about….

I rely on them implicitly to be able to talk frankly and complain without being judged, and to let off steam knowing that you really don’t mean it. And you sort of get a pep talk from your team and you get pushed back into the game. It’s like, you’ll be okay and dust it off.

It has just been essential for me in this role, being in such a highly visible, highly scrutinized environment to have people that you’ve known for that long where you can just be yourself and be vulnerable. And that’s one of the reasons why I encourage women to take care of our friendship, because while my husband is my best friend — and I love and respect him dearly — my female friends just provide a different kind of support. He is grateful to those women in my life as well. And he is somebody who understands my need to have my girls around me.

On support systems:

I think sometimes we, as women, feel like we’re not doing it right unless we’re doing it all ourselves. And I had to throw that out the window a long time ago. I had to sort of understand that getting help wasn’t a sign of weakness. In fact, our generation, we’re probably one of the first generations where we’re growing up trying to do everything.

On quality family time:

A great weekend is spending time together and listening to the girls, and hearing their ideas and talking about them and thinking about the future.

Can women have it all?

My message to women is: Be open. Give yourself a break. Stop thinking that there is an answer to that question, “Can women have it all?” Stop trying to answer it. Just live your life and figure out what’s in your heart and what do you need. And that will change every year, and you’ve got to be okay with that.

Parenting

There isn’t a day, there’s not a minute that goes by that I’m not hoping and praying that I’m doing what’s right for these girls so that they grow up independent and confident and loved and just ready to embrace the challenges.

On Television:

And it’s important to me that they learn lessons from everything. It’s like, say, if they’re going to watch a show, I’ll probably sit down and watch it with them just to see what lessons they’re learning from it. And if they’re learning the right lessons, then I’m kind of okay with it. If they’re starting to take in stuff that’s not healthy, then that’s when I’d be more inclined to intervene. But I haven’t seen that yet. They’re pretty level-headed kids….

On whether or not she feels pressure to keep her iconic toned arms in shape:

I just saw two weeks of Olympic athletes who have real arms, so I always wonder, well, what is it? My arms do not compete with people have “real” arms. But obviously, people know that exercise is important. For me, it’s a de-stresser, first and foremost.

On working out with her husband: (Mrs. Obama gets up at 4:3AM to work out; a friend of hers we spoke to confirmed she has been dedicated to this early morning workout routine for years)

Barack and I work out every day. So we spend time together in the morning. I usually get to the gym before he does. But he is usually there either in the middle of my workout or right at the end. And we’re watching Sports Center and we’re catching up. That’s why I know so much about sports…and you start having an opinion about Tebow and Mark Sanchez.

On working out on the road:

I bring a jump rope…I can usually do some jump roping in the hotel room. If I don’t have a rope or space, I might do a 30-minute routine that includes a minute of jumping jacks alternating with a minute of pushups, then some sit-ups. You take a 30 second break and do it again.

On Body Image:

I try to provide a good example for them. I want them — part of the reason why I work out is that I want them to see a mother, a woman who is working out, who is embracing the physical side of herself…. That’s why you see me jumping rope and hula-hooping with kids, because I think that they just need to see this is fun, it’s a game. It’s not that serious. You don’t have to be a great athlete. You just have to be willing to get out there and do it.

Michelle Obama & Gabby Douglass Share The Spotlight On Jay Leno {Video}

According to Necole Bitchie.com: Hot off the record-holding Olympic win as the first African-American female to win the all-around title in Gymnastics, Gabby Douglas has touched down in New York and  is already making the late night talk show rounds.  Her first stop was the Jay Leno Show last night where she had the honor to sit on the couch with the First Lady, Michelle Obama.

The 16-year-old  rocked a gold mini-skirt paired with a blazer as she name dropped McDonald’s (After the competition I splurged on an Egg McMuffin at McDonald’s) and was playfully checked by Michelle who was there to talk about her ‘Let’s Move Campaign’ that promotes healthy eating. ( I’m sure it was a whole wheat McMuffin! You’re setting me back Gabby.) Gabby also revealed that she never in a million years thought she’d be sitting on the couch with Michelle Obama, or even be interviewing with Jay Leno.

Meanwhile, Michelle was put on the spot when she was asked about why she didn’t kiss President Obama on Kiss Cam (the first go round) during a Team USA Basketball Exibition game in DC earlier this Summer.

Okay, so here’s the story. This is the background. We had just — the girls and I went somewhere else and we met him at the game. I had just walked in and sat down, and I just saw my face on the Jumbotron. And I’m still a little embarrassed. … I didn’t see the ‘kiss cam’ part, so I didn’t know we were supposed to kiss. Then Malia came over after we got booed for not kissing and she was just disgusted with us. She said, ‘Why didn’t you kiss?’ And I said, ‘Kiss what? What are you talking about?” She said, “You were on the kiss cam. You were supposed to kiss.’ We were not paying attention.”

Puerto Rico Official Make Racist Comments At President & First Lady Obama Via Twitter

Puerto Rico Official Tweets Racist Remarks About The President And First Lady

As if there aren’t enough people making racist comments towards the President, a Puerto Rico government adviser has now joined in on the slander.

An adviser to Puerto Rico’s most powerful female lawmaker faced calls to resign on Wednesday after she sent a tweet to President Barack Obama urging him to buy the first lady a double-banana sundae and take her to Kenya.

Heidi Wys sent the tweet last week shortly after Obama tweeted that Michelle Obama’s birthday was coming up.

“Who cares?” Wys wrote in response. “Take her to Burger King, buy her a sundae with double banana, take her to your homeland, Kenya!”

That tweet and several other tweets Wys sent earlier about Obama were still publicly visible on her Twitter account Wednesday afternoon.

Wys is the main adviser to House of Representatives President Jenniffer Gonzalez and has earned $630,000 since 2008 for her services as an administrative consultant, according to records with the Comptroller’s Office.

Several legislators are demanding that Wys step down or that Gonzalez ask for her resignation.

Smh. Another day, another racist comment from someone who should know better.

Michelle Obama Talks With TEAM USA!!!

According to Eurweb:

First Lady Michelle Obama meets members of the 2012 Team USA at the University of East London on July 27, 2012 in London, England. Michelle Obama addressed members of the 2012 Team USA as leader of the US Olympics delegation, ahead of opening ceremony for the Olympics

*Michelle Obama told U.S. Olympians she was “beyond proud” of them this morning, just hours before the evening’s opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Over breakfast at an east London sports center with some of Team USA – including women’s basketball players, fencing competitors and members of the track and field squad – the First Lady said they are inspiring millions of viewers back in the States.

“Some of my fondest memories growing up and as an adult involve watching the Olympics on TV,” Mrs. Obama told them. “My family would sit together for hours watching these men and women perform feats of endurance speed that would have us cheering at the top of our lungs.”

She added, “My brother and I would dream about how maybe one day we might be able to achieve something just as great for ourselves.”

FLOTUS also told those gathered how her father, an athlete himself, battled MS, which over seven years changed him from “a thriving competitor” (as a boxer and swimmer) to someone on crutches.

“The Olympics for him was a special time for him to watch amazing athletes perform on the world stage,” said the First Lady. “You never know who are inspiring: from a family on the South Side of Chicago to a young athlete going to pick up a soccer ball or start running after watching something you all do.”

Noting that “we are all proud of you all,” Mrs. Obama also had some advice. “Try to have some fun. Try to breathe and take it in. But also win!”

Spurred on by the University of Florida Gator Marching Band and whoops of approval from about 1,000 kids, many from U.S. military families based in the U.K. (and to whom the First Lady gave a special thanks), Mrs. Obama sprinted to a stage platform and said, “We are so incredibly proud of you, and anytime I get the chance to show you guys love, I do it.”

The children – who were joined by such athletes as David Beckham, Carl Lewis, Teresa Edwards and Shawn Johnson – were there for a day of sports and musical entertainment, all part of Mrs. Obama’s Let’s Move program to promote healthy exercise and eating.

But the main message of the day was about making healthy choices and never giving up.

“We love you,” said the First Lady. “But we want you to take care of yourselves, help your families, turn off the TV, eat some vegetables – yeah, that’s part of it! – because we want you guys to grow up to have the future you deserve. Is that a promise?”’
