George Zimmerman Suing NBC Over Edited 911 Tape

George Zimmerman’s attorney on Thursday confirmed his client is considering a defamation lawsuit against NBC over the misleading editing of a recording that he said made his client “appear he is a racist.”
In a statement Thursday, Zimmerman’s lawyer Mark O’Mara said NBC’s editing version of his client’s call to Sanford Police was “outrageous.”
“Due in large part to NBC’s actions, George has had to live in hiding, in fear for his life,” he wrote.
The audio, which aired March 27 on the “Today” show and in a report by an NBC-owned affiliate days earlier, made it sound as if Zimmerman volunteered to police that 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was black in the call he made before the Feb. 26 shooting.
In the NBC-edited audio, Zimmerman says of Trayvon, “This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.”
But those two sentences are not back-to-back in the original audio. In between, a police dispatcher asked Zimmerman about Trayvon’s race.

Sorry George, but we didn’t need those tapes to make us think you were a racist.

NBC since apologized, and three employees were let go, according to reports. The network declined to comment on Thursday.
Jon Kaney, an experienced media lawyer and general counsel to Florida’s First Amendment Foundation, said there are several elements of defamation that need to be addressed in Zimmerman’s claim.

First of which is:

The most basic: Is the edited audio defamatory? That’s subject to interpretation, Kaney said.
“[Zimmerman] begins with an argument that’s based on an implication. NBC did not say he is a racist,”

Secondly:

Zimmerman went into hiding soon after the shooting, weeks before the “Today” report. In the interrim, the case sparked international outrage, focused largely on Zimmerman.
Zimmerman’s high profile raises another key issue: Whether he was a public figure in the eyes of the law at the time of the alleged defamation.
If so, Kaney said, he’d have to show NBC “knew the statement was falsely made, or acted with reckless disregard for its truth or falsity.”

Tompkins says that although networks settle many defamation cases out of court, Zimmerman’s is not likely to be one of them.

She made over $85,000 a year in tips from her job as an exotic dancer…but this hot mess still used the aid from ‘Uncle Sam’ for plastic surgery and a custom pink paint job for her whip!

A former exotic dancer and paralegal accused of spending nearly $24,000 worth of federal aid on plastic surgery, a car stereo system and a pink paint job for her car has been jailed for food stamp fraud.
Appearing in Florida courtroom, Brenda Charlestain, 28, testified to being homeless and unemployed when she applied for the aid to help her and her five children. Thanks to her later work dancing, however, she made over $85,000 a year in tips.
Charlestain argued that of the accused total a large portion were gifts from male customers at various adult entertainment clubs in Southern Florida, the Sun Sentinel reports.
She said $9,187 was gifted to her for cosmetic enhancements and $1,100 for a sound system for her 2008 Dodge Charger – made a bright pink with government money according to prosecutors.
Between March of 2010 and June of 2012, court records show she was provided $900 to $1,100 in government aid every month.
She said out of her aid and tips she paid $1,200 a month in rent and $326 in monthly car payments.
Having pleaded guilty to the federal fraud charges earlier this year, as well as in providing a firearm to a convicted felon, her husband, on Thursday she was sentenced to 1 1/2 years in a federal prison.
Begging for leniency from the judge, Charlestain asked for a downgraded sentence to house arrest while stressing various obstacles she has overcome in life, starting with her father’s death when she was 10 and becoming pregnant at the age of 14.

A 33 year old Billings woman is behind bars Friday night after allegedly beating her three-year-old because the toddler looks too much like her father.
Angela Carrillo is held on two felony counts for allegedly assaulting a minor. Court documents say late Thursday night, two women told Carrillo they were going to take the child for a walk – but instead brought her to the emergency department to report the abuse.
One of the women told police she had to revive the child Monday after Carrillo beat her. Documents also say Carrillo allegedly yelled at the child and told her she was “tired of raising” her and that she “looks like her dad.”
When asked about the child’s injuries, Carrillo told police the child fell down the stairs.

Former NFL player Terrell Owens could face jail time for missing an important court date and being late on child support.

NFL superstar Terrell “T.O.” Owens missed his child support hearing at the Fulton County Courtroom on Thursday in Atlanta and now Judge John Goger is pissed. By the way, Melanie Smith, the mother of his 7-year-old daughter, says he’s $20,000 behind on child support…..so she’s pissed too.

“It’s a tragedy, not only that we are here today; this is the third case she has had to file in the last year,” said Melanie’s attorney Randy Kessler.

T.O.’s case was reset for July 19 and he could face jail time if he misses that one.

“We are hoping next week the case will come to a resolution and Mr. Owens will pay and pay every month,”said Randy.

When you decide to have umpteen kids, you gotta be OK with paying umpteen stacks of cash for them too.

A Washington Survivalist Says Plotting To Kill His Family Was “Exciting”

A Washington man who killed his wife and daughter before taking his own life made a chilling video before the incident, saying planning for the murders had been “exciting.”
In the video, released Thursday by the King County Sheriff’s Office, 41-year-old Peter Keller said normal life had become too boring. He detailed his plans for a life a life of crime – robbing banks and hiding out in a remote, underground bunker he spent years building.
“I’m getting to the point where just trying to live and pay bills and live as a civilian, go to work, it just freaks me out. It’s actually more comfortable for me to think about living out here robbing banks, pharmacies, just taking what I want for as long as I can.”
Keller shot his wife, Lynnettee, 41, and daughter Kaylene, 18, in their beds in North Bend, east of Seattle, on April 22. He then torched the home in what police said was an unsuccessful attempt to destroy evidence. Keller then retreated to his underground bunker in Washington’s Cascade Mountains, where he fatally shot himself five days later as police and SWAT teams moved in.
In the rambling and often disjointed 10 minute video, Keller – a survivalist who thought the end of the world was coming – said his planned life of crime would “be exciting.”.
“It won’t be boring and I don’t have to worry about Lynnettee or Kaylene and everything will be taken care of. It’ll just be me.”
After his death, a search of bunker turned up a large cache of weapons, ammunition, body armor, food and thousands of dollars in cash.
The video was among the evidence taken from the underground hideout and it was released by the sheriff’s office Thursday after the department announced its three-month investigation was completed, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
The video is “breathtaking in its evil,” said King County Sheriff Steve Strachan. He noted that Keller had been planning to kill his family for months – or even years – before the crime took place.
Keller also planned ahead for his own death. “I do have my escape and that’s death,” he said with a laugh. “I can always shoot myself. I’m ok with that.”

Whitney Houston’s Death Ruled As Accidental Drowning

MSNBC reports:

The official cause of death for Whitney Houston is drowning and “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use,” according to a report released Thursday by the L.A. County Department of the Coroner.
The report indicates that the Houston died when she was submerged in a bathtub filled with water, and also indicates that she had ingested cocaine.
Cocaine was said to have contributed to her death, but not the prescription drugs and marijuana also found in her system. The press release from the report concluded, “No trauma or foul play is suspected.”

The final coroner’s report will be released within two weeks.
